Browser confusion after failed authentication

If the authentication from the login dialog fails some browsers get confused:
- firefox will open the default browser login window
- chrome freezes
IE behaves ok.

If the server returns 403 (FORBIDDEN) instead of 401 (UNAUTHORIZED) Firefox behaves correctly, but in both IE and Chrome you are unable to login as they will keep sending on the credentials of the guest account.
