ABOUT
UberStudent is a Linux distribution for everyone, especially
higher education and advanced secondary students, people who
teach them, and their schools. It is designed for Linux
beginners while being equally satisfying to advanced users.
Version 4.1 of UberStudent is a Long Term Stable (LTS) release.
It will be supported for nearly five years, until April 2019,
by both UberStudent and Ubuntu developers.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
* 64-bit or 32-bit PC or Intel-based Mac with at least 1 GB of
memory. 2 GB of memory or more is strongly recommended. 4GB
of memory is optimal, and more is always better.
* DVD drive for installation or a USB port with a 3 GB drive
into which the UberStudent ISO has been placed with a
program such as UNetBootIn, available at
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net.
* The Live System may be run entirely from a DVD or USB drive.
UberStudent may long-term be run entirely from a USB drive
in which "persistence" has been set up. Again see UNetBootin
for a how-to. Please don't expect UberStudent to work with any
speed from a DVD drive.
* The UberStudent ISOs may be run in a virtual machine, such
as VirtualBox, available at https://www.virtualbox.org. When
configuring the UberStudent ISO in VirtualBox, select Ubuntu as
the base machine. GUEST ADDITIONS are preinstalled so UberStudent
will run full screen right away.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
SYSTEM
* Ubuntu 14.04 LTS base (updated to Jan 15, 2015)
* Linux Kernel version 3.13.0-37-generic
* Xfce 4.10
* Dedicated UberStudent repository (http://uberstudent.net)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
* For instructions on installing UberStudent to your computer's
harddrive, see,
http://uberstudent.com/wiki/index.php?title=Beginners'_Guide
* EFI Support (64-bit edition only)
* If your system is using secureBoot, turn it off.
* UberStudent places its boot files in /boot/efi/ubuntu
to work around Ubuntu bug #1242417 which is still not
fixed in Ubuntu 14.04. As a result, UberStudent
supports EFI installations but cannot be dual-booted
with Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and perhaps other Ubuntu-
based distributions. To run multiple Ubuntu-based
distributions on a single machine, the workaround
is to use VirtualBox.
* PAE Support (32-bit edition only)
* When booting in to the UberStudent live disk, please
select Force PAE Support from the boot menu.

DONATE

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
KNOWN ISSUES
* UberStudent-specific:
* None
* One of the first things you should do after installing UberStudent
is run the Update Manger, so any post-release issues that may have
turned up are fixed right away.
* Upstream Xfce issues:
* Template sub-menus do not show when right-clicking on the desktop.
Open the Thunar file manager and right-click to view them all. All
LibreOffice templates are viewable within LibreOffice, as well.
* Template icons on the desktop display at 16 rather than 22 pixels.
* In the Applications menu, the application category will not display
if all applications are categorized in to sub-menus. At least one
application must be in the application category that is not in a
sub-category. The UberStudent Appinstaller works around the issue,
unless you try to remove it; if you do and don't replace it with
something else, the Application category will fail to display.

CHANGES FROM VERSION 4.0 to 4.1
* Under the hood:
There are MANY changes under the hood, including
- All known installation and other bugs have been fixed
- EFI support (64-bit version)
- PAE support (32-bit version)
- Much faster boot time
- Cleaner, faster code throughout
- Improved auto-fixing of common Linux and Xfce annoyances
that are often frustrating and perplexing to new Linux
users
- Linux kernel 3.13.0-37
- MANY MORE.
* New UberStudent-specific features:
- Over a dozen stunning extra themes made by UberStudent - new!
They are, without doubt, among the most gorgeous in the
Linux world. You can see screenshots of some of them at
https://www.facebook.com/uberstudent/posts/876164119073261
- UberOxygen colored icon sets - new!
Mix-and-match them with the new themes!
- UberStudent Locales - new!
An easy-to-use yet feature-filled program to install and
switch between language environments. This was initially
forked from Linux Mint.
- Main Menu Restorer - new!
Restore the default Applications menu with a few clicks.
- Desktop Logo Toggle - new!
The conky desktop logo can be toggled on and off from the
Look and Feel menu. Toggling persists across boot times.
- Chromium Profile Wipe - new!
Export your personal bookmarks and create a clean Chromium
profile in a few clicks.
- UberStudent Update Manager - improved!
Groups dependencies resulting in a much cleaner interface
and near impossibility of package and dependency breakage.
Options to to review and install normally blacklisted
packages, such as Linux kernels and xorg. This program was
initially forked from Linux Mint.
- uberstudentsources - improved!
Finer-tuned apt configurations to avoid possible breakage
scenarios over time, and improved auto-fixing of issues
that are otherwise frustrating to new Linux users. This
program was initially forked from Linux Mint.
- UberStudent WebApps - improved!
All web-apps feature multi-browser support in this order:
google-chrome, chromium-browser, and whatever you have set
as your default browser.
- Showtime (screensaver inhibitor) - improved!
Much lighter code with zero resource-usage while you are
watching a movie.
- Propdrivers (driver manager) - improved!
Improved hardware detection and driver suggestions. This
program was initially forked from Linux Mint.
- UberStudent menus - improved!
Faster due to consolidated code. Added suport for new
freedesktop.org menu categories. Menu files pre-load at
startup so there is no display lag.
- Translations - improved!
Besides English, these languages are supported by
everything specific to UberStudent:
* French
* German
* Italian
* Portuguese
* Spanish
If you wish to help expand this list, please say so
at the UberStudent forums.
- UberStudent AppInstaller - improved
Lighter, faster code.
- Apt configurations - improved
Apt is configured to NOT autoremove programs, or even
ask if you want to do so. This is to favor a more stable
system by avoiding errors from wrongly removed packages.
HOWEVER, this also means that you will need to explicitly
remove the package uberstudent-xfce-desktop if you
intend to do any significant customizations to UberStudent;
otherwise, programs you may have removed will be re-
installed.
- Guest Account Configuration - new!
A Guest account is now supported but not enabled by default.
To enable it, simply create an account with the username
< guest > and add it to the nopasswdlogin group. The guest
profile is completely wiped and recreated at each guest
logout and login, and is seeded with additional features
such as a login prompt that advises guest users that they
must save their files to an external drive, and the
disabling of certain services on the guest account.
The guest account configurations are specific to Xfce and
the default mdm login manager in UberStudent. As this
is still somehwat experimental, please test the guest
account well before deploying it in any public environment.
- MUCH MORE!
* UberStudent Repositories
Version 3.0 introduced the UberStudent Repositories.
In version 4.1 they are better than ever. You'll find
additional packages not available in the Ubuntu
repositories.
No PPAs are used in UberStudent. In addition to the upstream
Ubuntu repositories and the UberStudent repository, the official
Dropbox, Google, Oracle, and Videolan repositories are part
of the default repository configurations for version 4.1.
UberStudent users should always prefer the Update Manager,
and not the command line or any other method, when doing
updates. This is to ensure the most stable system possible.
