for some reason when I enter 2 characters to be recognized it doesn't work, like so:
(FYI RA is much clearer with a fixed width font =)).
$ rm db -fr
$ pgm2txt english
------------------------------------------------
No filter file for language >none< found!
Please edit PATH_TO_LANGUAGE_FILTER in pgm2txt
and make sure you have choosen a valid language!

subtitle2pgm sometimes (approx. 5-10 times per DVD) produces duplicated images for one subtitle line. The duplicate image replaces the previous or next subtitle image, therefore it is lost.
Example:
Let's have a following subtitles on DVD:
1
Subtitle text1.
2
Subtitle text2.
3
Subtitle text3.
4
Subtitle text4.
After conversion to pgm, we get following images:

Anyone has a slightly better experience with gocr and sans-serif font.
I was trying to convert subs that use sans-serif that occasionally italicize, and frankly it was easier for me to simply transcribe by hand then using gocr. It would often mistaken a slanted 'a' as a d, substitute slanted 'l' with /, and just flat out refuse to recognize typewriter style 'g' even when I tell it to store the...

At http://triffid.funkmunch.net/console-tools/srtfix is a tool i've written (in perl) to correct a number of errors that gocr commonly makes while doing its thing. It also fixes subtitles that are too short, checks for overlaps and reindexes files. It can do time shifts and cuts as well.

I'm going to assume this project is no longer maintained but it is, however, still used. At some point in time libppm and compainion libs migrated to an all encompasing 'libnetpbm.so" library. I'm assuming this was the case anyway for the netpbm package.
If you edit your Makefile for subtitleripper from:
### enable ppm support ###
DEFINES += -D_HAVE_LIB_PPM_
LIBS += -lppm

libppm is no longer maintained, netpbm contains ppm support thankfully so
the nobody that mentioned to change the lib to netppm is correct.
