A complete Linux operating system designed for the Linux Newbee, windows users that are not aware of the Linux alternatives to apple user looking to make the change over to Linux but wants a similar look and feel of OSX as appose to the average linux distro with there own environment. No it's not a Mac and does not run mac software, nor is it a pear remake at all. I do like my Mac but don't like paying for all the software. Ubuntu Software Center which is on Pearl as many Linux distros, is loaded with software from the graphics end to the multimedia end. Pearl also has plenty of Office Software to meet all your needs.

Pearl was designed to have the look of OSX as opposed to look of Ubuntu's Unity and Windows 7 etc.

The main Pearl desktop is xfce however soon we will have both Mate and LXDE as well.

  • Ever so often I set out seeking a new flavor of Linux. Usually it is as the distro I have been running needs to upgrade into the next numerical version, and I find myself a bit tired of the familiarity I have developed with that OS. I also do this in this way because I want new Linux experiences. When I stumbled across Pearl Linux (version 1.2), it didn't take long for me to know I had found a gem (pun intended). I have kept a Pearl distro running on some machine since Pearl Desktop v1.2 was shiny and still fairly new. I wonder what's not to like with it. It has that snappy Apple OSX look (even I have to admit that looks good). It is easy to update with the the Ubuntu styled Software updater (MintInstall 7.5.4 and Gdebi Package Installer plus synaptic for Pearl Desktop ver. 1.2, App Grid for ver3.5) or you can choose the Synaptic Package Manager, or you can use the CLI in a Ubuntu style syntax to get it set. Pearl v 6.0 is loaded with all of the above plus another simply named 'Update Manager' that I'm unsure where its origins lie. Anyway, it's pretty easy to get and to stay updated using your favorite Graphical Software with all those choices. The downside is, it lacks some support if you get in over your head. When you have a problem you must learn to feel your way along adapting the solutions from other distributions to Pearl. That is the only thing I think hurts it. When you look at the big picture, it is mighty fine. Works well. Is very Ubuntu like where Ubuntu excels, so their forums are a great aid to the Pearl user. Try it. You will find it very likable I wager.
  • I've recently tried this Distro on my laptop.. it works very nice But some things are missing.. No Software update.. No ethernet/WiFi missing icon.. you must use terminal to update software.. Searching applications in File System found Network and Network Connections.. to setup WiFi and Ethernet connections icon.. All in all.. it Works, with some drawbacks.. I would have used the Mate version.. but 64bit won't work with my Laser printer.. and I like the xfce version design much better.. Thanks to the folks who developed this Distro.. LL
  • da un error al instalarse, he probado a instalarlo unas 5 veces
  • I had no luck with this OS. Firefox browser was unuseable and would freeze at every turn. Soon became apparent there was no working sound system. I presume it would not recognize my realtek sound card....so nothing. Hours wasted in downloading and trying to make something of this distro.
