I don't know enough to tell whether it is a jade bug or a stylesheet bug. I have various odd problems rendering tables with the tex backend. Html renders fine most of the time; my only issue with html is that the stylesheet doesn't honour colsep and rowsep attributes, but I can work around that issue with post-processing. utf-8 encoded characters beyond 0xFFFF are not being parsed correctly.
For a quick look try parsing this minimal XHTML example:

Sorry for the inconvenience. It would have been unworkable to enter that amount of text in a text input widget.

As reported in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=497584 MifDoc::Marker::Marker does
switch( crossRefInfo.type() ) {
and at the end of the switch has
case HypertextDestination:
setMText( T_string( "newlink " ) );
MText += crossRefInfo.crossRefText();
break;
Which will never be executed as type returns enum InfoType and HypertextDestination...
