this is the expected behaviour, inherited from spice3f5. Please have a look at http://newton.ex.ac.uk/teaching/CDHW/Electronics2/userguide/sec4.html#4, second clause.

While executing a circuit file (here attached in raw format as ouput : ngspice -b Fourier-test.cir -r Fourier-test.raw
I got:

should have added that Ubuntu has libXaw7.

Trying to compile on Ubunte 9.10
./autogen.sh succeeds
./configure
gives
checking if hardcoding of the X11 runtime library path is desired... no
checking for main in -lXaw... no
configure: error: Couldn't find Xaw library.
