User Reviews

  • I have no idea what the Gnome developers were smoking, drinking, or snorting when they designed that horrid Gnome 3 desktop. Fortunately MATE appeared to continue the sane and attractive desktop from Gnome 2. It does seem a bit harsh that Sourceforge gives it a description like this: "...non-intuitive and unattractive desktop for users, using traditional computing desktop metaphor."
  • MATE is the Linux Community's answer to GNOME 3 and Unity's failure to address user concerns of a K.I.S.S. principled, fully-functional desktop environment that "just works". There are some users who want something new, something fresh and often something like Unity or GNOME shell. But while these UIs may be pretty, they pay for their aesthetics by trading off functionality and performance. For everyone else, there's MATE :-) Disclaimer: I am a happy user of GNOME 3.2 shell on my desktop, but I think for my netbook, MATE is a far better choice.
  • Great work with this Gnome2 fork. It is just great.
  • This is a vital project to bring back a desktop environment that had not finished its usefulness. Please support this.
