When I use GTKWifi, after connecting, packets are dropped regularly, about once every 3 seconds. When I kill the application, the packet drops stop.
System: Dell Inspiron 1420n running Ubuntu 8.10 (Ibex).
Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection
Kernel module: ipw3945

I'd like to see this too! gtkwifi seems to work much better for me than that network-manager business. Trouble is, many folks are going to the "increased security" of WPA...

You can already use GTKWifi in XFCE using XFCE's 'XfApplet', wich lets you run Gnome applets within XFCE.

I would be great if GTKWiFi would turn off when I turn the wireless off on my laptop. The only reason I turn the RF off is to conserve resources when running on battery. GTKWiFi seems to use a lot of CPU time even when the RF is turned off.
