First-rate static analysis tool for Java! While it was designed to be used by professionals, it's also of great value to novices programmers. I use it in two classes that I teach, both as a debugging tool for students and a grading tool for graders.

FindBugs is an excellent resource for tracking down more bugs than traditional tools.

I only just found out about this project but am very pleased with the results. It found quite a few minor things and one resource leak that no-one had spotted and would have caused a lot of trouble eventually!
