I put the downloaded filedrop files into the root http folder replacing all existing contents and apache won't start. I then merged the downloaded filedrop files into the corresponding folders in the http root and apache starts but I get an internal error when I browse to it. I must be missing something.

Should be pretty straight forward, install Apache and put the files in the http root if that is the only thing you want to have running on your site.
If you want to do multiple web sites, you can use the virtual hosts example provided with the download.
