Even that would be a bit too special from my point of view. In some situations you might need a full path including the file name, in other situations you might need the path only.

There could be a new tag say MUIA_BetterString_AcceptFilenameDrop and only those BetterString objetcs that have this tag set to TRUE accept dropping of filenames.

This is implemented for some time already. As you mentioned, just set MUIA_BetterString_NoShortcuts to TRUE to let BString.mcc ignore the configured shortcuts. All editing actions can be invoked by using MUIM_BetterString_DoAction.
The point is that there may be more than one BString.mcc object in one window and hence the built in short cuts might interfere. Furthermore the Amiga styleguide...

I think you still fail to see the difference.
GSgui allows dropping icons on *one* string gadget only, but not on all of its string gadgets. This is why such a feature cannot be implemented in a general way.
Sometimes it may be absolutely undesireable to have such a feature. I.e. you don't want a string gadget containing email addresses to accept path specs of dropped icons. Moreover, you...
