I was zipping around the wilderness, delivering lots of
messages, when a message box popped up that said
"Decrementing invalid overhead map loc". The game
immediately exited without saving my character :(

    what version do you play? There were similar problems like
    this in 2.74b/c, I haven't had those yet in 2.7.5pre.

    I'm 99% certain I was playing version 2.7.5pre. I've been
    using that version since it was released.
