Xvidcap has a monitor "light" on the main bar that displays
green if no frames are dropped, orange if some frames are
dropped, and red if a lot of frames are dropped.
In this way, let the user can decide whether to stop the
recording or not.

After adding "minimize to system tray" and support for triggering actions from outside xvidcap (like a tool to start a capture session on a running xvidcap) to allow this to be bound to a key, I may get to revisit the auto-tuning idea of RFE # 832692.
