Subject: winboard feature

I never noticed this before, but winboard apparently
converts a position that
has no king castling rights into a position with castling
rights.

Try this:

Paste position to clipboard:
r1b1k2r/1p4pp/p2ppp2/6B1/4P3/2N2QP1/PqP3BP/5R1K b -
-

now Copy position from clipboard, and you get this:
r1b1k2r/1p4pp/p2ppp2/6B1/4P3/2N2QP1/PqP3BP/5R1K b
kq -

I guess winboard thinks that the black king hasn't
moved. Ok, so how about
pasting the pgn into winboard, then doing Copy position
to clipboard. You would
think that winboard would get it right now, but...

Paste the game, advance to move 20 (after 19...Ke8),
then copy position to
clipboard. You get:

r1b1k2r/1p4pp/p2ppp2/6B1/4P3/2N2QP1/PqP3BP/4R2K w
kq - 0 20

Not very helpful behavior. If you try pasting the correct
fen into winboard:

r1b1k2r/1p4pp/p2ppp2/6B1/4P3/2N2QP1/PqP3BP/4R2K
w - - 0 20

winboard passes the incorrect fen to the engine. So, in
order to analyze the
above position correctly, you have to paste the pgn in,
go to move 20, then
select analyze. Zappa's move, 20.Rf1, is pretty good
here. In fact, all
Zappa's moves seem to be pretty good these days,
especially when running on his
dual. Tough to beat.
