That is to be expected, given that Java uses unicode for all
strings and those example characters are in some 2-byte
format...
Can you still edit and open the files in the file manager?

gb, koi-8, euc_jp and so on) that converting them all to
unicode would be massive task..
Even assuming you knew which conversion to do for a
particular file!
