I need to make subtitles in indian languages, for example Tamil(56 in your sample). The characters come properly in the UI, but not in the previewed video.

My OS is XP with SP3. To reproduce I loaded my utf-8 project with the avi video(mpeg 1 video, mpeg1 Layer2 audio), and loaded text pipe from the .srt file in this sample:

Added the tamil portion of the srt as a subtitle to a portion of video. On playing the video, the subtitles have only �.

It's probably related to the default font used by the subtitle renderer (VSFilter).
You should try using SSA/ASS with a different font, and also see if the problem show in another media player or text editor.
