When I run xscreensaver lament with no hw_boxes
in the left-upper corner apears garbage and
soon the entire Xserver with lament will freeze.
When I run it with hw_boxes=1 everything is fine.
Magic SysRQ works, I can sync and reboot.

GLX package is based on Mesa 3.2cvs and utah glx-20000201.
G400
ABit BP6
dual Celeron @400MHz not overclocked.
AGP
kernel 2.3.41

I have seen this as well. Weird that it works if hw_boxes is specified.

If you specify -no-texture as an option to lament it works just fine for some reason.

Interesting, if I disable the backtofront function it will not lockup either.

I had a similar problem, with utah glx-2000041, also using an AGP Matrox G400 but otherwise different hardware:

    single Athlong @600 MHz
    Asus K7M motherboard
    Linux kernel 2.2.14

Symptoms were slightly different from listed above; when I ran the screensaver from the Gnome screensaver setup I got a lockup but no garbage in the upper-left corner; running xscreensaver-demo gave me the screen garbage but no lockup. Setting hw_boxes=1 corrected the problem for me as well.
