hello, I`ve just upgraded my host maschine to 2.6.14.4-skas3-v8.2 #1 SMP Sat Dec 24 13:13:11 CET 2005 i686 GNU/Linux and my guests to 2.6.14.4-bs3 #1 Sat Dec 24 14:25:47 CET 2005 i686 GNU/Linux I`m using the skas mode for the guests (cmdline mode=skas) The maschine has 4 guests. Three guests run just fine *until now* The last guest, which has 784MB ram (host is highmem enabled with 2GB ram) allocated, fails to boot -> soft lockup just after mounting the / filesystem on ext3 in data=journal mode (I didn`t try other modes) Strange is, that with 2.6.11.12-bs7 #2 Sat Aug 20 22:35:46 CEST 2005 i686 GNU/Linux, the guest boots and runs just fine on the same host kernel. This bug isn`t so new to me, because I had similar problems with 2.6.12.x but i reverted back to 2.6.11.12, where all was fine. The filesystem is a ubdas on LVM2 logical volume (as all others). 2005. Hello, it looks like i`ve found a workaround good enough for me. I discovered, that the problem is only present, when I boot a guest with more than 256MB of ram enabled. I spread my services to more guests (7 instead of 5) with <256MB ram. I tested all the kernels I have compiled before and had no problems at all. Even the newest 2.6.15-rc7 does the job fine in skas0 mode. I though, that disabling HIGHMEM and running <256MB ram guests helped. But that was yesterday. Today I had to 20x start/kill the guest before he went up (2.6.15-rc7 skas0). But YES, you can call it a "better result" because I didn`t give up until it started :-) I don`t understand it at all :-/ How much memory is recomended for a guest? That's why we didn't fix it before shipping the releases. I don't use often huge amounts of memory, but things work. However, the kernel you built has all kinds of options built into, i.e. way too much. I could also suspect you have also enabled CONFIG_3_LEVEL_PGTABLES, which is not recommended. And/or CONFIG_SMP, also not recommended. Try the binary kernels at my homepage (see signature), 2.6.13 and 2.6.14 available - they're built with reasonable configs.
