Hi! I'm trying to build a network with uml but i'm having problems to do the=20 virtual network behave as a real network. I'm using bridges to link hosts= on=20 the same (sub)network and creating all virtual NICs i need. But a ping fr= om=20 one network hit the host on another network with pass thru the gateway. H= ow=20 should i build the network to behave=20 as a real network? Best regards, Roberto |

How should i build the network to behave > as a real network? I've successfully used UML networking and standard linux tools to simulate real network environments. The method I use is this: 1. Set up bridges on the host for each "switch" you want to simulate. 2. Set up tap interfaces on the host for each "ethernet cable" you want to simulate to connect between your "switches" and your UML machines. 3. Set up interfaces inside UML as you normally would. For instance to set up a network of two switches and three UML machines, where two of those are clients and one is a bridging firewall, you'd set it up like this (roughly): host br0 br1 /| |\ | / | | \ | client1-uml| tap0/ | | \tap1 |client2-uml eth0------' | | `------eth0 | | | | | tap2| |tap3 | | | --------|---|-------- eth0 eth1 br0 br1 bridge-firewall-uml - Two simulated switches: br0 and br1 on host - Four simulated ethernet cables: tap0, tap1, tap2, tap3 on host - UMLs use tuntap to connect to host - Be sure to manually specify MAC addresses for the UML ethx interfaces; normally the MAC addresses are generated on the fly based on the IP address in the UML -- however for situations like this it's better to do it manually because the bridge-firewall-uml's interfaces are never actually given IP addresses in this scenario.
