anyway... it looks like it's not finding the notification-daemon process.
i will update the code to be more generic (basically, go through all user's processes one by one until i can find the dbus-session address, and then use that one.) that should work regardless of whether a specific process is running.
will post the latest code in a bit, hope you're game to test it. :)

Hi,
ah heh yea, they still haven't fixed that - i have narrowed it down specifically to a linux-firefox-family bug (downloading the file with another browser, i.e. not firefox or seamonkey, worked like a charm).
so, just use wget to get the attached file (or dillo, or elinks, or well, anything but firefox or seamonkey).

I fetched that version down (1.5.6) and updated my installation.
Next I tested running the crontab entry from the bash prompt:
/usr/local/bin/ubuntuzilla.py -p firefox -a checkforupdategui 2>&1 | logger -p user.notice -t "UBUNTUZILLA" --
And got the expected popup, and /var/log/messages showed a clean run.
I will wait until tomorrow to actually do the update and make sure that it runs without error when run by cron itself... but not expecting more errors.
Thanks much! :-)

To test the cron notification, I rebooted my workstation and JUST logged into the desktop. I did not start any programs.
The notification did appear via cron. So I think this is clearly resolved, as any daemon(s) that UbuntuZilla needed to start on its own, it was able to start them and provide that popup notification.
Great work!

fyi, here's the tracker item about this sourceforge problem, feel free to post to the thread if you discover anything new about it: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=2030006&group_id=1&atid=200001
(if using another http client is for some reason not viable or doesn't work, let me know and i'll upload directly to the webserver so you can get it).
Thanks for your help, and sorry for the inconvenience...
and by the way, i have also posted this latest version on ubuntuforums, here:

Thanks for posting also to ubuntuforums.org
I fetched the package from there and upgraded this evening. When FF gets updated again I hope to be properly informed! :-)

Well, there is a FF update once again. Again errors with the 4.5.5 build of UbuntuZilla. See messages-2.log.
I will leave this box unupdated so I can check your fix right away... at least as soon as I can be at this box! ;-)

Hi,
Thanks for reporting this! :)
Looks like a bug in the process-walk code i had... please test the latest release candidate.

Please install that .deb, and then see if the auto-update-notifications actually work now. :)

ah, very encouraging news. :)
please do let me know if the cron run works as well, and if so, i'll push out the release.

sounds cool. I'll make the release. :)
