Dear all, I hope I'm posting on the right mailing list about this... :P It seems that I can never run tuxracer with 3d acceleration. I've read all help, faq, howto for tuxracer, glx driver, X, display driver, etc, but still doesn't help. I think (and I hope) it's not the problem of my X setup, as I can run quake 3 properly. Another thing, from one of the howto I've read at http://utah-glx.sourceforge.net/faq.html#AEN229, it suggested that the library the game using may not be the correct one. And it said I can do a ln to link the /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.0 to /usr/lib/libMesaGL.so. I've tried this too and when I run tuxracer, X just crashes. My display card is Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT... and I'm using the riva tnt x server... Thanks a lot. Pigeon. |

I've heard similar things from other people with TNTs. My guess is that you actually *are* getting 3d acceleration, but the bottleneck is GLX. TNTs can only do indirect rendering, AFAIK, while 3dfx cards like mine have direct rendering support. I'm going to rewrite the main rendering loop to use things like compiled vertex arrays, which will hopefully speed things up. Things should also get much faster when your card gets direct rendering support (which should happen when XFree86 4.0 comes out). The problem is that Quake installs it's own private copy of Mesa (in order to avoid just this exact problem) and links to it dynamically after it starts up. That makes it pretty irrelevent that Quake runs OK - so let's ignore that for the moment. Hmmmm - nVidia's drivers have been in a lot of trouble recently - and the fact that it takes down X-windows strongly suggests that it's not the fault of Tuxracer. I suggest you look for a newer (or even older) version of the driver - and take this up with whoever supplied you with the driver/X-server.
