Currently when I hit my activation key to 'drop' tilda down so I can use it, I then have to click on it to make it usable. Can it be written to that it grabs focus on use?
There is code in tilda that already attempts to get the focus when tilda is pulled down. The problem is that some window managers attempt to keep applications from stealing the focus, which is generally a very good thing.
For example, KDE has a focus stealing prevention. If you're using KDE, you can disable focus stealing prevention for tilda, and then it will automatically grab the focus when it is pulled down.
If you need help with this, come into IRC and ask. I'm also going to try and write a wiki article.

I'm marking this as closed. In 0.9.5, we've done everything we can to get the focus from the window manager. Some window managers have focus stealing prevention, which we cannot overcome. If Tilda does not grab focus correctly, please try re-configuring your window manager's focus stealing prevention.
