Note: TeXstudio was forked from Texmaker in 2009. Back then, they had the same code base and functionality. Today, these programs are not related in any way. So there is nothing odd that TXS and Texmaker have different distinct functionalities.

Text analysis is a nice feature, but texstudio's word count feature in the pdf viewer is orthogonal, since it counts the real words in the output (including bibtex generated bibliography, expanded macros, etc.). So I agree with the OP that a word count feature similar to texstudio's would be very useful.

Note that the functionality itself is in the Tools menu, under Text Analysis.
