I can't stop preview just updating to a selection. I have 2.9.4 and am running OS X 10.2.2.
have you tried "remove inline preview" from the context menu ?
There is currently a limitation that the cursor needs to be on the line of the preview selection. Otherwise "remove inline preview" does not work.
Please check that this is the case.
