Switch is an optimal investment planning model for power systems with large shares of renewable energy. It identifies which generator and transmission projects to build over a multi-decade period in order to satisfy electricity loads every hour at the lowest cost, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Please note: the main Switch repository is now at https://github.com/switch-model/ . The new version is written in the Pyomo modeling language, and can be run without any commercial dependencies. We recommend using the Pyomo version for any new work.
This website hosts an older version of Switch, written in the AMPL language. This requires an AMPL license and an appropriate solver. Additional scripts must be written to generate data files describing the existing power system and investment options (e.g., locations and timing of wind and solar power projects).
