***************************** * SUE-Newsletter March 2009 * ***************************** SUE is short for Screenreader & Usability Extensions, an effort to make screen reading on Linux more usable. SUE is based on the former Linux Screen Reader (LSR), an excellent platform for all kinds of assistive applications. SUE itself is the first of those assistive applications, namely a screen reader for graphical user interfaces on the GNOME desktop. SUE is available either from SVN trunk or in version 0.4.0 from our download section at Sourceforge.net. Documentation including installation instructions may also be found at http://sue.sourceforge.net. * New functions in SUE: *********************** * Realisation of the new output concept: Up to now the scripting of SUE was almost exclusively concentrated on speech output. We developed a new output concept for SUE, which does not burden the script writer unnecessarily with always considering all possible output devices. The concept was implemented over the last two months and, as a first result, we already see more detailed output on the Braille display. Please be aware of some substantial changes in the scripts. This time after the update and reintalling SUE you need to delete the hidden folder .sue in your home directory. Then start SUE. This has the effect that all user profiles with the correct scripts are rebuild. Please let us know if you run into any trouble in the process. * Bugfixes: *********** Bug: SUE reads the list of open applications on the key command (Alt +Shift+F11). With no applications open, the command did not produce any output at all. Now the user gets a respective message. Bug: The Trash button in the bottom expanded edge panel can now be read by SUE. Bug: The SUE shell command 'sue -y "string"' sends the given string to the speech engine. An error in loading the SUE settings in the method SUEMain.say() prevented this. The error was fixed and the command works again. Bug: If one of the standard user profiles provided by SUE was deleted, all standard profiles were restored to their standard settings. Now only the deleted profile will be restored. Bug: The text attributes like font weight, font size etc. could not be read for selected text. SUE just read the attributes for the text at the caret. Now the correct text attributes are send to the output devices. * Current work: *************** . The enhancement of the Braille output continues. . We are also working on a new Braille monitor, which uses the compiz window manager. . Implementation of the large-print monitor continues along with contrast/color filter generators for Compiz/ eZoom. . The script for Firefox support still needs more work. . The SUE documentation is about to be re-structured and updated. If you are intrested in testing SUE but experience problems at any point, please don't hesitate to send a message to this mailing list. If you find a bug, you may add it to our bug tracker on SourceForge.net or send an e-mail with your bug description to sue...@it.... A few notes on how to submit a bug in either of those ways and which information to include are available on both our project wiki at http://www.sue-projekt.de (in German) and our documentation page at SourceForge.net (in English). To request a feature, you may use the same means of communication. Thanks a lot for your tests, comments, and feedback! Dear core developers of SUE, Yes, i will very glad to translate Sue messages to Czech language. But please, give me some instructions. How to translate The messages? And which text editor will support saving in unicode and will not corrupt file by adding carriage return and line feed characters? I AM ready to start translating. Should i edit The file in The subfolder \po with The name en_GB.po Thank You for Your ansver. I have Tieman Braille Voyager USB connected braille display with 44 cels, so i can also debug Braille related issues. I Am very glad, that i can cooperate with Your development team. |

Dear Janusz, > But Czech specific > characters are not correctly pronounced by Espeak. This problem is fixed now. Please do a svn update in your /sue folder and go through the ./configure, make, make install procedure again. Czech special characters should then be pronounced correctly. By the way: Would you like to add to the czech translation of SUE? Currently the translation is only about 13% done, so you probably encounter more english words than czech. > Your development team has made alot of work, because i > have original LSR and source code on my computer to. You have added > new dialog boxes, TABS and functions and keybinding features are > working very well, including ammazing function mute speech, which can > be activated by pressing LEFt and right control. Very good idea. Thank you for your praise. We know there's still a lot to do to turn SUE into a full screen reader, but we're happy to hear someone appreciating our effort. > Sue support for Mozilla Firefox is being probably in The > development, SUE is teeling me scan complete but probably navigation > keys will be added later. Webbrowser support is crucial and while we're still working on it, we're hoping to be able to provide an efficient algorithm soon. We have tried a few approaches but so far, but none of them satisfied our and your needs. > So i think, that SUe project is very good and i will be very like to test > it and help with it's debugging. Dear Janusz, we're glad to hear that you were able to install SUE. So, first of all: You may open the SUE settings dialog using (Alt+Shift+F2). Play around! We look forward receiving your feedback! Regarding spreadsheet support: It is on our list to provide a usable spreadsheet support and we have had some preliminary thoughts on which behaviour we would like to see in SUE. Reading the contents of a cell and not only the name if it is, of course, very important. Currently we are mainly concentrating on improving the output complexity, especially in view of Braille output. Once this is done, spreadsheet support is at the top of our list. We look forward to hearing your ideas on how tables should be read in a usable manner. Apart from that, maybe you would like to try to write your own script for Openoffice Calc support? As you may expect from other screen readers, support for specific applications in SUE may be added by writing a script for it. We have once started to write a tutorial on how to write scripts for SUE, which is in German, I am afraid, but we would, of course, provide you with all necessary information. Regarding speech support in SUE: Speech support is one of the main topics of our work. As you have recognized, it is pretty slow and stuttering. We are therefore working on an improved speech output (possibly using speech-dispatcher, pulseaudio, and Alsa). We are planning to include multi-channel output (should be done sometime this summer) and some extras (to be implemented afterwards). Hope this helps! Regards, Martina Mgr. Dear core developers of SUE, I would like to please You for necessary repair, because Czech characters are not sended correctly to Espeak CS synthesizer. Algorithm for detecting language and for svitching to The right Espeak voice is working reliably and is OK. But Czech specific characters are not correctly pronounced by Espeak. It will be necessary to modifi IBM LSR module, from which You are outcoming. Your development team has made alot of work, because i have original LSR and source code on my computer to. You have added new dialog boxes, TABS and functions and keybinding features are working very well, including ammazing function mute speech, which can be activated by pressing LEFt and right control. Very good idea. Sue support for Mozilla Firefox is being probably in The development, SUE is teeling me scan complete but probably navigation keys will be added later. I also tried braille support in tables in The Openoffice ORG, it worked. Rewieving commands are not crashing crashes, so there are good algorithms used. So installation of SUE can be performed without troubles, but The users of Ubuntu Intrepid must install components listed in The readme file, in other case there will be crash during ./configure command or make command. But Espeak is being detected and also braille display. User have to start Brltty, but everythink else is working very well. I was able to use Nautilus, PC man file manager all dialog Windows, TABS and controls were accessible, including list of files and folders. So i think, that SUe project is very good and i will be very like to test it and help with it's debugging. I wisch You a nice night. The kindness regards. Janusz Chmiel |

Dear core developers of SUE, I would like to inform You, that i sucessfully installed SUE to my Ubuntu intrepid distro. I can use all features, eventhough support for Gnomespeech services and Espeak is slov, time betveeen key stroke and Espeak speech is longer than one second. I would like to give You some tips for integration with Speech-dispatcher. Please try to make reliable algorithm, better than in The Orca. Because in The Orca, eventhough speech-dispatcher is installed, properly configured, and Python API interface for Speech-dispatcher python-speechd'. is correctly installed. Orca can enable users to use Speech-dispatcher, but when user is choosing this module, Orca is always using Gnomespeech services. So users must uninstall Gnomespeech to use Speech-dispatcher. Unfortunately, it will be very complex to debug some situations, while Speech-dispatcher is causing random crashes and will stop to work. The onlyone solution, which I Am currently know is to use OSS audio server, eventhough i do not like this solution, because users can not use multichannel sound output, and some sound carts are not supported by OSS audio server. To debug this, it is necessary to intensively test Speech-dispatcher with ALSa audio server and enable debug log for Speech-dispatcher and to inform core developers of this module. Next pleasment, could You try to develope algorithms, which could enable visually impaired users to use .xls table in Openoffice Spreadsheet application? This table is not supported by all screen readers, only Javs can tell, in The which cells is stored comment and user must be placed on The right cell, in other case, also feature for displaing comments in Javs will not work. I would like to hear not only cell and line number, but i would like to hear The values, which i should write to The specific column and line. Only openoffice ORG spreadsheet is able to atleast correctly navigate between lines and cells, so up arrow key will really decrease The line number. I will send The table to The MR Zenker. I would like to deeply appreciate Your development team, if You would atleast try to find The cause, why this table is so not accessible. Last pleasment? Which keyboard shortcut is used for displaing SUE settings dialog window? Thank You very much. The kindness regards. Janusz Chmiel |

Dear Janusz, welcome to the SUE mailing list! Would you mind subscribing to it? You may do so at https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/sue-list One advantage of subscribing to this list is to receive our monthly newsletter :) Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) is the minimum requirement to run SUE, but you may also install Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (8.10) or even Jaunty Jackalope if you're brave ;) Please try to install SUE according to our installation guide. With Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04, no additional packages should be required. If you have any problems during your installation, please write to this mailing list again to let us know. If possible, please include any error messages you may get. If things go well, speech will come up immeadiately when you start SUE. You mentioned you were using live CDs. We recommend using live USB sticks (which should be at least 4 GB in size), if your computer can boot from a USB stick. For digging deeper into SUE, however, we recommend installing Ubuntu on your computer. Hope this helps and hope to hear from you again soon! Regards, Martina Mgr. Dear core developers of Sue, I Am ready to deeply cooperate with Your development team like a tester. I Am ready to debug SUE in various Gnome applications, Openoffice ORG, Spread sheets, and other similar programs. I will install Sue from The trunk in The evening today, because now I will go to A job. I installed Ubuntu Hardy heron, because in the readme file You were write, that Sue is developed in The Ubuntu hardy heron distro. I know about ubuntu Jaunty development LIVE CDS, but i think, that will be better to test SUE with official releases of Ubuntu. I was not able to try Sue, install it while booting from A Debian Leny Gnome-live CD, ./configure or ./autogen.sh produced error message. So please, if i will successfully finish installation of Sue, how to start it to hear The speech? Thank You again. The kindness regards. Janusz Chmiel |

Hi Bernhard, we are glad to hear that the installation has become easier. If Sue is work with you, everything is in order. During the installation process by "sudo make install" the file global.installed is automatically generated under/usr/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/sue, and the second file you asked for (sue.mo) is copied to /usr/local/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES. There should exist an actual sue.mo with the time stamp of the installation time. If this is not the case, please do again the installation command with output redirection as follows: sudo make install > output 2> &1 and send us these output file. Then we can also see any warnings. Dear experts, I now installed the new sue with maekfiles from svn - it is great, really easier to do than it was. Altough, as I could see from first tests, sue is working, I found two strange things: 1. In the sue/src directory, there is no global.installed file any more. 2. the sue.mo file in the /usr/shared/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES is still from November 10 - so, the make process did not update it. Are these two observations of relevance, or did you define other locations for the files? I am a little concerned, because the "make install" produced serveral warnings - unfortunately, I could not read them. Nonetheless, I am happy with the new way of installing sue. With kind regards, Bernhard |

********************************* * SUE-Newsletter December 2008 * ********************************* SUE is short for Screenreader & Usability Extensions, an effort to make screen reading on Linux more usable. SUE is based on the former Linux Screen Reader (LSR), an excellent platform for all kinds of assistive applications. SUE itself is the first of those assistive applications, namely a screenreader for graphical user interfaces on the GNOME desktop. SUE is available from either from SVN trunk or in version 0.4.0 from our download section at sourceforge.net. Documentation including installation instructions may also be found at http://sue.sourceforge.net. * New features and functions for SUE: ************************************* * General: . We have released SUE version 0.4.0, our second prototype. It supports OpenOffice Writer, flexible keybindings, and much more. . SUE provides make files for an easy installation. . Within the SUE settings dialog you may now choose your own hotkeys for SUE and/or change modifier keys. * OpenOffice Writer: . Upon opening the Navigator or styles and formatting dialog windows, SUE now focuses those dialogs automatically for immediate interaction. * Magnification: . SUE now integrates the Compiz window manager which provides plugins for magnification and colour filtering. A description on how to use Compiz with SUE is available in German in our project wiki (www.sue-projekt.de, 3.4.2 Einstellungen). An English version will follow soon. * Bugfixes: *********** Bug: When calling 'sudo make install' during the installation process for SUE, a second AT-SPI process and a second Bonobo registry were started. We have cleaned up the import statements and therefore fixed this bug. Bug 2262822: Upon pressing ESC in the SUE Quit Dialog, SUE used to quit anyway. This is now fixed and the action is cancelled as expected. Bug 2107097: When returning to the open SUE search chooser, the last search string was not selected which was not the expected behavior. This is fixed. The search string is selected and may immediately be overwritten by a new one. * Current work: *************** . Work on the script for Firefox support continues. . The concept for the Braille output improvements was established and will now be implemented. . The concept for the improved main settings dialog was defined and will be realized step by step over the next months. . Tests and improvements for OpenOffice Writer support. . Tests and improvements for customized key settings. If you are interested in testing SUE but experience problems at any point, please don't hesitate to send a message to this mailing list. If you find a bug, you may add it to our bug tracker on SourceForge.net or send an e-mail with your bug description to sue...@it... A few notes on how to submit a bug in either of those ways and which information to include are available on both our project wiki at http://www.sue-projekt.de (in German) and our documentation page at SourceForge.net (in English). And I would like to add: The option in tools/options/accessibility was there since version 1.1, assuming you talk about the "AT support" check box. This is only used/needed on Windows, so you probably didn't notice it because of using Linux.. Malte. Dear sue experts, I want to test sue, and orca, with OpenOffice Writer, and I have two questions about that: First: Which version is appropriate? On the ubuntu standard tree, we still have OOO Version 2; however, I do know that accessibility support was greatly improved with Version 3. In particular, they have now a switch in the "tools / options" where ehnanced accessibility support is activated: So my question: Is ist already worthwile to test sue with OOO 3.0? Does sue make use of the new accessibility support introduced in Version 3? Second: If these questions are answered "yes": What is the easiest way to instal OOO 3 on an ubuntu? Thanks in advance for your answers, with greetings of the season, from Bernhard |

SUE is available either from SVN trunk or from the stable 0.3.1 branch. Documentation including installation instructions may be found at http://sue.sourceforge.net * New features and functions for SUE: ************************************* * General: . Querying text attributes using (Alt+Shift+f) was improved: .. The first call yields standard formatting attributes (such as font and font size). In OpenOffice, the name of the template will be announced as well. .. On the second call, SUE announces the text colour. .. On the third call, all text attributes will be read. . Leaving or closing windows is announced while applications seem to randomly loose focus. We'll look into this some more. * OpenOffice Writer: . The new OfficeScript provides the following functionality: .. Support for menus and dialogs, the template, and Navigator window (F5) which provides document navigation by element category. .. When navigating through a document, template changes are announced from one paragraph to the next. .. The key command (Alt+CapsLock+i) enables jumping between search field and content in the Help window. * Bugfixes: *********** Bug 2191589: Pressing (Alt+CapsLock+n) for reporting the number of e-mails produced an error. Fixed. EvolutionScript now correctly reports the number of shown e-mails. The problem was the result of an erroneous function call. Bug 2107030: Search results in Evolution were unreliably announced. This bug could not be reproduced anymore and seems to be fixed in connection with other changes in the script. Bug 2276341: SUE entered an endless loop, when it tried to exit while speech was hanging. The flawed method was fixed. Bug: SUE did not identify the language locale correctly when choosing eSpeak voices. This is now fixed. SUE only uses voices for the correct locale now. Bug: SUE did not empty the output cache for speech when shutting off speech. This bug was due to a confusion of two function calls. Bug: OpenOffice provides a value range for all elements including e.g. buttons. If this value range is 0.0 to 1.0 with a step of 1, it is no longer announced as it concerns an element with only two states (yes/no). Bug: An error occurred on SUE's Braille monitor upon markup parsing due to incomplete entity references, i.e. when the text to be displayed contained '&' or '<'. Fixed. Entities are parsed before markup is parsed and set. * Current work: *************** . Documentation for the OpenOffice Script will be added within the next weeks. . Work on the script for Firefox support continues. A first version will be available with the next prototype at the end of November. . The work on magnification support was paused due to issues with higher priority, but will continue at the end of November. . The concept for Braille output improvements was established and awaits implementation. . The concept for the improved main settings dialog was defined and will be realized step by step over the next few months. . Last improvements and documentation for the CommandChooser are made, before it will be released for testing. . SUE is about to be localized to Hungarian. Hello Bernhard, Thank you for reporting this problem with the braille device. We already found the error and fixed it. Braille should work again with the svn revision 478 of SUE. Please write again, if you still have problems. Now on to your second problem. The functionality is there, but it seems to me your SUE does not know that yet. Please try the following command (from the sue source directory sue/src): ./sue --init-global After that you should find a setting in the SUE settings dialog (call it with Alt+Shift+F2) on the page tab "scripts" in the SUEScript. Here you can set the option 'Show a confirmation dialog upon SUE shutdown?'. This setting will be automaticlly set with a newly installed SUE. Thank you very much for testing SUE and reporting your test results. I hope we could help you. Dear sue people, I was away for some time, so perhaps I missed something. But now I updated to the latest svn version, 473. Two things come to my mind: 1. Braille support disappeared again - it was there now for quite a long time; now, the sue welcome message is readable in Braille, then no further Braille output is given. 2. I requested a feature, namely, the implementation of a confirmation dialog on sue exit. Although I saw in the sourceforge that this has been opened and closed again, and although I saw in the logs on svn that this has been implemented, i do not discover the feature in the latest revision. Do I have to turn it on via a configuration dialog? Thanks and best regards, from Bernhard Stöger |
