Stellarium runs fine on my Dell Latitude D-630 Win Xp laptop, 30FPS easily. Runs between 3-5 FPS on the Win 7 machine, very jerky and clunky.
Machine is Win 7 Home premium 64, Core i5 3570K CPU, ASrock Z77 Pro4 MB w/ Intel HD 4000 integrated video, double checked and confirmed to have the latest drivers.
Video has been checked with Phoenix RC Flight Sim, 0fps, so I know the integrated controller is working fine.
FAQ says "This happens when hardware rendering is disabled. If you have a 3D video card, make sure that your OpenGL drivers are installed and up to date." Double checked and confirmed OpenGL 4.0 support, OpenGL enabled.
Stellarium 0.11.4 64 Bit. 32 bit version on XP laptop works fine.

"Downgrading" to 0.11.2 32bit resolved the issue. 160+ FPS now, MUCH faster load time.

You likely do not have the same issue as the OP from end of 2012. Which of the seventeen versions which have appeared since then are you discussing?
Why should it get faster? 150fps+ seem enough (GTX 960M). Of course, you must know how to set up a computer to operate it properly. (Install drivers, etc.) 8.5fps? You may be running soft-OpenGL (MESA). Not even that, my quad-core runs that at 22fps.
