Quick question: Is it possible to just display stars with a certain characteristic? In other words, instead of showing the standard constellations, showing the constellation boundaries in the sky but showing just, say, visble red giants, or stars/nebulae within 100 light years, or maybe stars with known planets, etc. I guess it would be fine to have the regular constellation configurations in the background, but I was just wondering if it is possible to highlight only stars/sky features of your choosing.

Stars with known planets you can be show with help of the Exoplanets plugin. Plus you can show stars and DSO with limited visual magnitude. Other filters doesn't exists in Stellarium.
