I've been informed that SpyAmp 1.6.3 works great with Winamp 5, so you should use that version instead of SpyAmp 2.x if you use Winamp 5.
It has been reported that SpyAmp will crash on Winamp 5.x when someone tries to download a song. I do not have the time or motivation to fix this, so my advice is to disable song downloading in the SpyAmp configuration if you use winamp 5.x.
It's been a long time since the last update, and it's likely that it'll take a lot longer before the next one. First, I've lost interest in the project, mostly because I've switched from Windows to Linux on my workstations. Second, I'll be going into military service this spring, and that'll last until December 2003, leaving me very little time for computer work. The good news is that SpyAmp is open source and that anyone can fork the project as long as they release the source code under the GPL license like I did myself. Be aware, though, that some experience with C programming is required to avoid introducing security holes. Almost all the code I've received from non-C-programmers so far have introduced potential security holes, or at least made it possible to crash Spyamp along with Winamp remotely. Oh, and Merry Christmas to you all, and thanks for using my software :-)
I've released version 1.6.3 to fix a few small bugs. Meanwhile I've received more patches from Sam Allen to get new features (support for multiple playlists and 206 partial content), so a 2.0.3 release is on its way.
We have Winamp3 support! Version 2.0.2 has been released, it works with Winamp3 only. Be aware that the code is beta quality, and remember to read the documentation before reporting bugs. Enjoy.
I've received a port of SpyAmp that runs on Winamp 3 from Sam Allen. Unfortunately, it contains some major flaws that need to be worked out before I'll release it. I'm working on it...
I've released 1.6.2 shortly after 1.6.1 because a nasty bug was discovered by Caleb Harrelson. Please upgrade if you want the "login with password" feature to be usable.
It's official, version 1.6.1 is no longer vaporware :-). Hurry up and download it. It's been over a year since the last release, but don't worry, SpyAmp isn't dead yet.
I'm hoping to release version 1.6.1 Real Soon Now (tm). It's been in beta for a long time now, but there are a few issues with getting it to validate as XHTML I need to look at. I have no spare time at the moment, but with luck I'll have time to release it in a few weeks.
I just changed the server list so it's sorted by uptime now, instead of being sorted randomly. Maybe I should start to record the uptime hi-score :o)
The project isn't dead, it's just sleeping :)
I just got a contribution from Louis Helm, an Analog configuration that works with the spyamp logs: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=150079&forum_id=49101
I've also added the link to the download page.
I started development on the next version, trying to incorporate many of the suggestions and feedback I've received. Right now I'm concentrating on a skin/template feature so users can change all the hardcoded html. When servers first started appearing, they all had the boring default colors. It seems that most people have understood how to change the colors now, so the skin idea seems like a logical step.
The guys at winamp.com finally woke up and reviewed SpyAmp... and it got 4.5 out of 5! It took them about 6 months form I submitted it first, but here it is: http://www.winamp.com/components/detail.jhtml?componentId=49631
I've just released the new version 1.6.0, which brings a bunch of new features and improvements. Hurry up and download it.
Version 1.6.0 (previously called 1.5.3) is in the "Win98 testing phase" now. This means getting some friends who have this OS to run it and tell me if it crashes or behaves weirdly. Then I'll work around that problem so it works... I wonder how much software is developed this way :-)
The next version (1.5.3) is almost ready. I want to fix one more bug, then I'll release it.
I've been waiting for other sites for a long time now. I need mp3.com and winamp.com to review+publish SpyAmp, and SourceForge need to fix a lot of stuff that's broken on their site. I submitted SpyAmp for winamp.com reviewing back in early December, but they've been too lazy to publish it. mp3.com did publish it, but they have a site problem causing it to not appear on any list (so people can't find it although it's there).
It appears that the SpyAmp site - http://spyamp.sourceforge.net/ - looks like shit in Netscape 4.x. The server list in particular is messed up. I suggest upgrading to Netscape6/Mozilla, or using some other browser like IE or Lynx. The HTML is validated to correct 4.01, so don't blame me ;-)
Version 1.5.2 is out now. Fixed a total-crash bug, added measures to escape firewall mp3 filtering, cleaned up some code, made skin names look prettier.
The next version (1.5.2) is just about ready. I'll need to test it some more, then I'll release it. I haven't updated the news for a while, but I usually update the Version History part of the info page http://spyamp.sourceforge.net/info.php when I'm working on something.
Version 1.5.1 is out, making some improvements to the config options.
Got the home page news tied together with the SF news, saves me some work!
Patch release 1.5.0-1. No need to upgrade existing installations, see the release notes.
The web site at http://spyamp.sourceforge.net/ is running, and I released 1.5.0 today. Go get it, and remember to visit the web site ;-).
Great, I got the Sourceforge site running. I'll try to put the files and the home page up fast...
