That's actual "...without spending a day [or seven] setting up a server..." for some of us. :) many thanks for putting this together Andy, I'll be checking it out soon. matt wilkie -------------------------------------------- Geographic Information, Information Management and Technology, Yukon Department of Environment 10 Burns Road * Whitehorse, Yukon * Y1A 4Y9 867-667-8133 Tel * 867-393-7003 Fax http://environmentyukon.gov.yk.ca/geomatics/ -------------------------------------------- |

Hi Liz, Thanks for your quick reply. I checked with Hostgator and they told me I don't have root access or sudo (I'd need a dedicated server for that, which goes beyond my budget)...but they said I can get shell access. Would that do the trick? All the best, JJ Liz Henry wrote: > > Hi JJ, > > Welcome! Do you have either root access or sudo on that Hostgator > account? [Resent from the old Sourceforge list on behalf of mam...@ya...] Hi Andy and anyone, I am very interested in using SocialText Open (grad student). I have a hosting account with Hostgator (shared, not dedicated) using: OS: Linux Apache Version: 1.3.37 (Unix) PERL version: 5.8.7 I have some basic knowledge on installing software, I've installed phpBB2, for example. I saw some guidelines at this link about an Ubuntu, but I think things might be different for the machine I'm using: https://www.socialtext.net/stoss/index.cgi? socialtext_open_install_guide_for_ubuntu_6_06 I'm a little in over my head guessing from the Ubuntu installation, but I'm willing to spend time figuring things out. To all of you who have signed up for the Socialtext mailing lists at SourceForge, thank you. We hope they've provided some kind of help or education as you get into Socialtext and Socialtext Open. We've moved the mailing lists to our internal Socialtext infrastructure at http://lists.socialtext.net/. This allows us to do cool wiki-ish things with the archives that we couldn't when they were on SourceForge. We're also combining socialtext-dev and socialtext-user into a single socialtext-user list. We hope you'll choose to join us on the new mailing lists. YOU WILL HAVE TO SIGN UP YOURSELF. We are not migrating users over, because some people might not want to make that move, and we want to leave the choice with you. Mailing lists home pages: * https://www.socialtext.net/stoss/index.cgi? socialtext_open_mailing_lists * http://lists.socialtext.net/listinfo socialtext-announce: * http://lists.socialtext.net/listinfo/socialtext-announce socialtext-user: * http://lists.socialtext.net/listinfo/socialtext-user Again, you will NOT be automatically migrated over to the new lists. We hope you'll sign up for the new lists, so you can see the cool magic that Luke Closs, programmer and juggler extraordinaire, has been working on. Any questions? Let me know. If you've had problems installing Socialtext Open because it gets stuck creating the help workspace, download 2.9.5.2. That release fixes it. There are no other new features. Andy -- Andy Lester => an...@pe... => www.petdance.com => AIM:petdance |

I've completed the move of the Socialtext Open repository from SourceForge to our own internal Subversion server. Details and URLs are at https://www.socialtext.net/stoss/index.cgi? socialtext_open_source_code. There is nothing in the SourceForge trunk any more other than a README pointing to the new page. If you have any questions, please let me know. Andy -- Andy Lester => and...@so... => www.socialtext.com => AIM:petdance |

Get it at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php? group_id=170460&package_id=194571 [ENHANCEMENTS] Users can now add custom JavaScript to pages. There is now a "weblog print" feature. The ceqlotron should now use memory more efficiently when indexing large pages. Updated the Workspace Settings menu with new features for privacy. The Workspace Settings menu is now three separate menus to reduce clutter. Fourth release of the REST API, 0.93. See specifics at: http:// www.socialtext.net/st-rest-docs/index.cgi?rest_api_0_93_release_notes [FIXES] Attachments were not deleted from the search index when the page was deleted. Safari users would not get redirected to the new page correctly after leaving comments. Changed the DocumentRoot from /var/www/socialtext to /var/www/ socialtext/docroot. This prevents anyone from accessing other directories under /var/www/socialtext. -- Andy Lester => and...@so... => www.socialtext.com => AIM:petdance |

For that workspace the url would be: http://www.socialtext.net/data/workspaces/medialiterarcy/pages In a browser that will return an HTML list. If you make the request with an Accept header of "text/plain" it will be text list. You can see this from the browser with: http://www.socialtext.net/data/workspaces/medialiterarcy/pages?accept=text/plain I hope this helps. Hi Social Text. I am trying to figure out how to output a raw text index of page names from a socialtext wiki. I thought that ?action=index;raw=1 would do it, but it doesn't seem to work. As in: http://www.socialtext.net/medialiteracy/index.cgi?action=index;raw=1 What I am trying to accomplish is the same type of output that you get when you use this action on some other Perl-based wiki engines, for example: http://socialsynergyweb.net/cgi-bin/wiki?action=index;raw=1 This raw text output of page names then allows me to NearLink<http://oddmuse.org/cgi-bin/wiki/Near_Links>from an OddMuse wiki to a Socialtext wiki. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! https://www.socialtext.net/stoss/index.cgi?wikithon Come to our Wikithon! On Wednesday February 7th in Palo Alto, CA, the same day as Wiki Wednesday, Socialtext is hosting an all day open hackathon. Our entire development team will be in town and our doors are open for you. Remote Access Can't make it to our offices in Palo Alto? No problem! Please feel free to follow along remotely (and if you want to remotely pair with someone to accomplish a particular task, please note that here as well). When you've completed your project, make a page in /stoss describing it, and tag it 'wikithon' so other people can find it. We'll be doing a show and tell of the hackathon output in the evening at Wiki Wednesday - so even if you can't hack with us, please come to Wiki Wednesday and admire all the cool things people made. Infrastructure We're putting some infrastructure in place so that local and remote participants can collaborate: * IRC - irc.freenode.net, channel #socialtext * Two open conference meeting rooms - 801 and 805 (external callers call 1 877-GET-WIKI and then the extension) * VNC servers available for connection: oak.socialtext.net:1 and oak.socialtext.net:2 * Food and beverages will be available at the office Ideas Even if you're having trouble thinking of anything to work on, come on by and see if you can lend someone else a hand. We're eagerly looking forward to some cool new Socialtext plugins and hopefully some new API clients. We'll have some folks hanging out who are familiar with Socialtext internals, to help you get started on your widget. Contest We're going to have two contests during the Wikithon - best Socialtext Plugin or best new Socialtext API Client. Prizes are still to be determined, but we hope to encourage our hackers to come up with cool new ways to extend and use our application. -- Andy Lester => and...@so... => www.socialtext.com => AIM:petdance |

Let's keep this on the mailing list so that others can see, and maybe help more. > Here's our /etc/sudoers setup: > > %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL > <snipped> I agree, it looks fine. I'm as certain as can be, though, that it's not something Socialtext itself is doing, and is something specific to your system. All the makefile is doing is calling sudo. We have dozens, hundreds of machines that have installed with the Makefile. Could you have another sudo in the path? A shell alias? What if you have a shell script that calls, say "sudo ls" and call that shell script with sudo? Will that work? -- Andy Lester => and...@so... => www.socialtext.com => AIM:petdance |

This incident will be reported. It sure looks like something in how your sudoers file is set up, because the makefile isn't calling anything weird. I'm no sudo expert, but I know there are different ways you can set up sudoers such that different people have different permissions. 2.7.1.0 Thu Jan 11 20:07:41 CST 2007 [FIXES] Introduced new portable init scripts that should start up apache-perl and ceqltron without all the cross-platform headaches we've had. Fixed a problem where access to the database was getting done as the wrong user name, if the "www-data" or "wwwrun" user had to be added manually. Fixed a bug in the installer when certain run-time directories were not getting their permissions set correctly. Is anyone out there hosting Socialtext Open on an Apache with other virtual hosts? How's it working out? I just wrote a quick HOWTO on how to do it. Comments and questions welcome. Thanks, Andy HOWTO.multiple-hosts -- How to have multiple hosts in Apache @COPYRIGHT@ Socialtext Open is designed to behave nicely with an Apache configuration that includes other hosts. Here's how to do that. == Single-host Apache setup The simplest way to set up Socialtext Open is the default, where you use /etc/init.d/st-apache for starting the Apache daemon. st-apache loads /etc/apache-perl/st-httpd.conf, which in turn <Include>s /etc/apache-perl/auto-generated.d/nlw.conf. The st-httpd.conf contains the high-level Apache configuration items, like what port to use, MIME types, etc. There is nothing related to hosts in it. The host information, including hostnames, paths to handle, etc, are all in the nlw.conf. (The name "nlw.conf" is a remnant from Socialtext Open's earliest incarnations as "Nice Little Wiki".) == Multiple-host Apache setup All you need to do to get a Socialtext host co-existing with your other virtual hosts is to include it from your main httpd.conf. Include /etc/apache-perl/auto-generated.d/nlw.conf Make sure that you don't edit any of the values in nlw.conf, since they will be overwritten next time you do a Socialtext Open upgrade. # END OF DOCUMENT # vi: set ts=8 sts=4 sw=4 expandtab # -*- text -*- -- Andy Lester => and...@so... => www.socialtext.com => AIM:petdance |
