the README needs to include 'elementtree' in its list of dependencies. I had to install it after getting an error on line 29 of 'snowballz.py'. Fortunately it pointed to the correct location (http://effbot.org/downloads/#elementtree) After that, got another error on line 48 of 'snowballz.py', no 'PIL' installed (web site listed as http://www.pythonware.com/downloads/index.htm) after that it loaded into the 'flying game', but I got really lousy performance. One screen draw every 3 or 4 seconds, sometimes slower. Not sure why. Running Xorg with "ATI" driver (on-board AGP2 adaptor) in 1280x960 24-bit color mode, and both the "glx" and "dri" modules are loaded. System is PII 400Mhz with 192Mb RAM, which should be able to render things like this pretty well. Shouldn't need 3Ghz box to play it, in other words. FYI - also had to fix 'Soya' in a few places so that it would build on FBSD. Specifically, on FBSD the SDL files are in /usr/local/include/SDL11 (normally a configure script would take care of this but they're using a python-based installer). So it was necessary to manually edit them. Everything else that it depended on was available as a port, so there were no additional problems. To facilitate installing Soya on BSD-based systems it will probably require a port of some type (one for Apple, one for *BSD's). |

As was recommended, if you use #!/usr/bin/env python -O as the first line in the python scripts, it seems to work fine in FreeBSD. (interesting, I learned a new command today) |

Well, I have seen some python apps use '#!/usr/bin/env python', but this=20 simply begs the question :P:P Another option would to provide a shell script containing: #!/bin/sh env python /usr/local/snowballz.py (or the like) Another way would be to have setup.py take care of it. =C2=A0Perhaps provid= e an option such as '--python-bin'. I've added 2 music files to data/sounds The file 'intro.ogg' is the 27 second 'intro' (366k) that is intended to be played during a splash screen of some kind during startup.. It's the same one that I posted a link for a couple of days ago. The second is 'drum.loop.ogg' (30k), a loopable 'drum' background that can play any time you don't have some other background music you might want. The intent is to bust that up with other chunks of music in between, and I can provide a few of them as needed. You can also loop it indefinitely if you want. Other music ideas might be to have a "you got froze" sequence, a 'building' sequence, maybe something else. It's just a capture from the first second or so of 'intro.ogg', mostly a proof of concept at creating loopable sounds. With some rather careful wave editing I can make it possible to loop them without artifacts. It was mostly just me figuring out how to do it. OGG files were encoded using the default 'oggenc' settings, resulting in CD quality stereo and a bit rate around 106kb/sec |

So I'd suggest something like this: a) application loads b) draw initial splash pixmap/bitmap within a window, keep it hidden until rendered. c) display splash window, start music as soon as the 'paint window' function finishes. d) after 10 to 15 seconds, switch to a credits screen, possibly with a "cool transition".. e) allow 30 seconds for song to finish, then jump right into the game console (most likely a demo or config screen, however you wanted to do it) Pressing the space bar or 'esc' key should terminate the splash and theme so people don't have to listen/watch it every time. I'll encode this into OGG format and include it with the project if there are no objections. |

nevermind, I was using 'anonymous'. Still a little difficult to work with, but I managed to add 3 files. basically it's 'bite.wav' 'chew.wav' and 'walk.snow.wav'. The third one is intended to be "walking in packed snow". I have other sounds that I'll do for deep snow, leaves, and maybe dirt gravel or sand as needed. Also will have a 'run' vs 'walk' sound for deeper terrain. I created a number of different sounds in my 'raw' files so for the most part I can just extract the best ones and try to use them 'as-is'. What you have now should be sufficient for testing the concept. If the sounds don't work please let me know. You should queue them so they mix also. If you need separate right/left foot let me know and I'll pan the sound across. These files are 16-bit stereo PCM so they're a little large, but not unacceptably large. I intend to leave the original '.wav' files available in all cases except for the music. |

I deciced that the best way to get snow sounds was to use shredded styrofoam, so I'm slowly accumulating a sufficient supply by the use of styro blocks (from equipment I purchased a while back, where I'd 'kept the package' for warantee purposes) and a cheese grater. It'll probably take a few days to get enough, since I can only grate it for a few minutes at a time, and must wait for a while between "gratings" for the static charge to wear off, or else it just clogs up the grater and gets everywhere. Should have sufficient snow by the end of the weekend, and I'll be able to use it for various 'snow' effects as needed. Other sounds will be much easier. |

We need to revise the TODO list to reflect the SimpleDesignProposal and the decision not to do the flying game right now.
