Hello, today I got a new HD and tested it with smartctl. I had 5.33, so I first downloaded the latest version 5.36. But the -P option said that the drive is not in the database. So here is the log as an attachment (full output for -Pshow, -tshort and -a). It's a 2,5" drive with 120GB. By the way: does G-Sense_Error_Rate = 1 mean that someone allready dropped the device? And do you know, if they use sensors that can memorise shocks even with power off? By the way: why I got a new drive. 2 days ago my old drive (TOSHIBA MK4019GAX) had problems when searching which I could cure by tilting the laptop about the rolling axis. And when spinning down it made some nasty noise. Maybe a worn-out main bearing. But the drive reported itself as 68% left for Power_On_Hours (12803) and 55% left for Load_Cycle_Count (450290). So I think that the test results are not really meaningful. That's not your fault, I only wanted to note that people shouldn't imagine themselves save when the drive says so. I am not sure about the correct interpretation of G-sense error rate. Perhaps someone else on this list can help. The usefulness of the self-test results does depend upon the quality of the disk manufacturers firmware. But in most cases it is useful at least for indicating if there are unreadable sectors on the disk.
