Hi - although XFCE Power Manager is installed I cannot see it under Programes - I would like to set the laptop to hibernate when not in use or if the battery is low/ reduce screen brightness after a period of inactvity (etc). NB not sure if relevant but trying to access Control Panel settings gives the message "No running instance of xfce4-panel was found".

    Kind regards

    sudo apt-get install kpowersave-trinity
    Reading package lists... Done

Package kpowersave-trinity is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'kpowersave-trinity' has no installation candidate

When watching a movie the screen goes blank every 10 minutes and I have to get up and wiggle the mouse. Very annoying. Changing the screensaver doesn't help. There is no power management app. And kpowersave-trinity app is no longer in the repos. Feel like I've hit a dead end with this distro.

There is no 'kpowersave-trinity' but 'tdepowersave-trinity', you can install this way:
    $ sudo apt-get install tdepowersave-trinity
    The proper documentation link: http://www.q4os.org/dqa007.html#pwmanag

You can easily configure DPMS display blanking options:
Right click on desktop -> Configure desktop -> Display -> Power Control tab -> Enable display power management -> set all DPMS options to 0 or some desired values.

Do suspension and hibernation work correctly without 'tdepowersave-trinity'? If not, maybe they should be disabled in the shutdown dialog if 'tdepowersave-trinity' is not installed?

That's true. Systemd power management works correctly on some hardware only, but the detection is unfortunately difficult. Maybe we could think about to disable buttons, if tdepowersave-trinity is not installed.

You could gray out these options, show the warning message/install tdepowersave if someone clicks on these buttons, or whatever.

The warning might contain this checklist (it's especially crucial if someone got a desktop computer):

      • check S1/S3 settings in BIOS,
      • USB keyboard wake-up enabled (both in BIOS and using motherboard jumpers),
      • you may want to update BIOS to the latest version
