Hello Mark, I suspect your Netbeans installation might be corrupted. I have been using PlantUML with Netbeans 8.0 for a couple of months now. I use it both at work on Windows and at home on Linux Mint.
Did you try to delete the PlantUML files from Netbeans installation directory or something ? Usually that can cause this kind of behaviour.
Try to delete any stray PlantUML files.
Uninstall the plantuml plugin from the Netbeans plugin window.
Run the commands below.
cd ~/.netbeans/8.0
tree . -R | grep plantuml
If you see any files listed, then remove all the files and directories
one by one. If you don't see any files listed, then try the next method.
Restart Netbeans
If that doesn't fix it try to reinstall netbeans. This might fix any corrupted netbeans files. Then check to see if your issue is fixed.
If that doesn't fix it, uninstall netbeans and delete the ~/.netbeans/8.0 directory and try to reinstall netbeans again. Warning Please be warned that this will delete all your netbeans settings.
If that doesn't fix it, please paste the content of your plantuml file.

Hi. Thanks for the reply.
I can now see PlantUML in the plugins center list so I will install that way.
Many thanks.
