I've actually been using it in production for quite a bit already. The reason it's in Alpha is that we're still adding new features, so it has to stay in Alpha till we get slave zones and reverse zones (which you can now just generate with mkrdns). Once slave zone support is added, I'll scratch my head, page through my dns book and call it a Beta. :-)
BTW: Grab the CVS version, if you want to use in production in general. It handles slave zones without vomit and dribble (ie, by ignoring and passing through).
