I finally gave up driving old Hayes Optima 33.6 card
modem (RH 7.2 insisted it was a memory card!), and
bought another one. RH 7.2 recognizes it as modem,
but cannot initialize it to connect. I have a floppy with
modem driver data, but it's for Windows. Is there some
way to use this configuration data in RH?

Can you give more details? (i.e. what kind of laptop is this,
what is the specific brand and model of the new modem card,
how did you determine that the card is being recognized
correctly, what are the specific problems you see now, with
    exact error messages?)

To answer your question, no, you can't really use the
Windows configuration data for anything. If the modem
genuinely requires a Windows driver, it could be a Winmodem.
