when you give path to file manager, if it ends with directory it opens it, but if it ends with a file it goes looking for default application for that file and open that. Its fine, but there should be switch that would make it behave differently. for example a switch called --select (dolphin has this approach)
pcmanfm /etc/samba/smb.conf - this opens the file in whatever you have associated with conf
pcmanfm --select /etc/samba/smb.conf - this would open the containing folder and highlight the file smb.conf
Nemo, Nautilus, Dolphin, doublecommander,... many file managers support this in one way or the other
this switch is/would be very useful for software that passes paths to file managers, users would probably not make much use of it.
alternative to switch is to just have it wark always like that, nemo & nautilus do it like that, and it makes sense since you are passing path to file manager and if its file it wont get even involved. But if people are already used to something.... just adding --select switch would be maybe less problematic
