As great as the ANSI is, it is very restrictive when
dealing with post MS-DOS consoles which can do
layering, keyframe animations, and multiple (>16)
colours (TheDraw can do first two). A SVG (or a
subset/extensions) file format allows these
features to be exploited on targeting console when
available.

This may be done by utilizing a proprietary format to store
information. SVG is a vector graphics format, which is
unsuitable for ANSI renderings. If a proprietary format were
to be implemented, a console-based output generator could
then be created to render these images to web sites on-the-
    fly.

NAPLPS is an ANSI standard (ANSI X3.110-1983), so it's not
proprietary, even though the existing NAPLPS editors are.
There is a GPLed Java NAPLPS decoder/viewer at
    http://www.ajwm.net/amayer/software/ .
