That would be true when OpenSong would support transparant images. But OS does not, so this is not a bug, but a feature request for support of transparent images :)
The white background you see probably is in the image, marked as the 'transparent color'.

your reply at first puzzled me, because I am using transparent images already. I am using it in a picture slide (without additional text) and also as section specific song 'background' image with text on a transparent background in order to get diststinguishable dual language lyrics on selectable background images. So, apparently, OS is capable of supporting transparent png images.
My image uses an alpha channel, so there is no 'transparent color'. The area that is fully transparen might be white, though.
