I've come across a couple of issues and I've given some
thought how to solve them. See below.
First problem:
Right now there is no real limit on the speed of firing
fireballs. It's possible to throw one and then throw
another the second after the first hits. So a character
can't jump over the second fireball after blocking the
first - it's impossible to get high enough into the air
before being hit the second time. This means that a
simple tactic of just firing an endless stream of
fireballs will win or at least paralyze the other
player and slowly reduce his lifebar to zero.
The ideal situation:
Ideally player A throws a fireball at player B. Player
B is hit but before player A can throw another fireball
player B has the option to jumpkick and hit or block or
whatever - but to do something that will stop the
second fireball. Currently it's very difficult to do
anything.
The solution:
Stick in a realistic delay of something like 2 seconds
between the fireballs. Player A can't fire a fireball
more often than once every two seconds - so the
fireball tactic evaporates and fireballs go back to
being purely a tactical weapon.
The second problem:
Time it takes for a character to recover from a fall.
Right now a character who falls takes a very long time
to get back up and block. This means that it's enough
to just knock a character down and you can take away a
substantial amount of his lifebar. This covers tactics
that *aren't really* combos like firing a couple of
fireballs at a char immediately after he has been
knocked down - the fireballs are unblockable.
The ideal situation:
A player knocked down is able to press the block key
and actually block immediately. In fact in general I
think that block should be more useful by being
instantaneous. If a player has pressed block that
means he has seen an attack coming and reacted before
that attack to prevent it - so he should be able to do
so. Also, falls should be shortened so a character can
get back on their feet faster to react.
