Based on the conversations from the POC conference calls on 6-25-13 and 7-2-13

    • flower development stage (PO:0021004):
      Revised def'n:
    • A reproductive shoot system development stage (PO:0025530) which begins with the onset of the floral organ meristem development stage (PO:0007601) and ends after the post anthesis stage (PO:0007617).

    • floral organ meristem development stage (PO:0007601), (was: flower meristem visible stage):

    • A floral organ formation stage (PO:0025585) which begins with the development of the floral organ meristem (PO:0000229) from a portion of meristem tissue (PO:0009013) and ends with the beginning of the floral organ primordium development stage (PO:0007602).

    • floral organ primordium development stage (PO:0007602) (was: flower meristem notched stage):

    • A floral organ formation stage (PO:0025585) which begins with the appearance of the floral organ primordium (PO:0025477) and ends with the beginning of the floral organ differentiation stage (PO:0007600).

Proposed revised definitions for flower development stages. See issue 597 (http://sourceforge.net/p/obo/plant-ontology-po-term-requests/597/) for reason for this proposal.

    Proposed wordings:

    flower development stage (PO:0007615)

Definition: A reproductive shoot system development stage (PO:0025530) that has as primary participant a single flower (PO:000904) and occurs during the interval between the onset of a flower meristem transition stage (PO:0025588) and the end of a flowering stage (PO:0007616) in an individual flower (PO:000904).

Comment (no changes): This term and its sub-classes apply to an individual flower (PO:000904). For the development stage of a whole plant (PO:0000003), use whole plant flowering stage (PO:0007016). During this stage, a flower undergoes the process of flower development (GO:0009908), defined as the process whose specific outcome is the progression of the flower over time, from its formation to the mature structure.

note 1: I added the phrase “has as primary participant a flower” because otherwise, the definition could also include an inflorescence development stage. The use of “a single flower” as opposed to just “a flower” is important to ensure that the criteria used to describe the beginning and end of an interval are not in separate flowers. It may also be useful for eventually specifying a logical definition that uses a cardinality constraint of a single flower as a participant (which will help distinguish this from inflorescence development stages). Maybe having it in there twice is overkill, and the one at the end could be removed.

note 2: This is currently defined as ending “after the flowering stage”, which leaves open all of the time either after pollination or during which the floral organs are senescing (which is presumably generally after pollination if pollination occurs). I changed the definition to say the interval ends at the end of a flowering stage to make it a discrete landmark.

    floral organ formation stage (PO:0025585)

Defintion: A flower development stage (PO:0007615) that occurs during the interval between the onset of a floral organ meristem development stage (PO:0007601) and the onset of a flowering stage (PO:0007616) in an individual flower (PO:000904).

Comment: During this stage, the processes of flower formation (GO:0048460) and flower morphogenesis (GO:0048439 occur. Flower formation is defined as the process that gives rise to the flower. This process pertains to the initial formation of a structure from unspecified parts. Flower morphogenesis is defined as the process in which the anatomical structures of the flower are generated and organized.

note 1: Converted the wording to an interval, instead of beginning and end and added individual flower to definition.

note 2: Changes the punctuation and wording in the comment, because it was very hard to follow.

The three subclasses of floral organ formation stage

    floral organ differentiation stage (PO:0007600)
floral organ meristem development stage (PO:0007601)
floral organ primordium development stage (PO:0007602)

can keep their definitions similar to as is, but change the wording to say “occurs during the interval between X and Y” instead of “begins with X and ends with Y”, plus add “in an individual flower” or similar.

    flower meristem transition stage (PO:0025588)

Definition: A flower development stage (PO:0007615) that occurs during the interval between a transition of a portion of meristem tissue (PO:0009013) to a flower meristem (PO:0000229) and the onset of a floral organ formation stage (PO:0025585) in an individual flower (PO:000904).

Comment: During this stage, a process occurs involving a vegetative to reproductive phase transition of meristem (GO:0010228), defined as the process involved in transforming a meristem that produces vegetative structures, such as leaves, into a meristem that produces reproductive structures, such as a flower or an inflorescence.

note: Converted the wording to an interval, instead of beginning and end and added individual flower to definition.

    flowering stage (PO:0007616)

Definition: A flower development stage (PO:0007615) that occurs during the interval between when pollen is released by anther dehiscence (GO:0009901) and/or a stigma (PO:0009073) is receptive, and a process of pollination (GO:0009856) and/or floral organ senescence (GO:0080187) begins in an individual flower (PO:000904).

Comment: In most species, the interval defining a flowering stage (also known as anthesis) begins when the flower is open, but this cannot be seen in cleistogomous flowers (flowers that do not open). Likewise, for most species, the interval defining a flowering stage ends with pollination, but if there is no pollination, then the interval ends when the floral organs start to senesce. During a flowering stage in androecious (male) or bisexual flowers, the process of anther dehiscence (GO:0009901) - defined as the dehiscence of an anther to release the pollen grains contained within it - usually occurs.

note1 : Changed the wording to specify an interval, and also reworded the criteria describing the beginning and ending of the interval slightly.

note 2: Moved the mention of an individual flower to the definition from the comment, because I think it is an integral part of the definition.

note 3: Added a bunch of stuff to the comment to try to make it clearer. Because of the alternate beginnings and endings of the interval, the wording of this definition is hard to follow, and I think it needs extra clarification in the comment.
