I thought the whole point wasn't tracking individuals, it was to anonymously upload information about the world. There is no reason for a user to get a login and password to anonymously upload information about the world.

Yes we care about users privacy and that's why we suggest any user to use the offline API. It is not mandatory to post data in order to use it but only to mention the contributors of the project.

We request login and password to be able to erase all the data that would polute the database. We are very similar to the mapping activity of openstreetmap.
