Dear Kevin and friends: NOTE: My MPlayer version is MPlayer 1.0-0.pre7-2tex ("tex" stands for Texstar, our lead developer and the one responsible for building the rpm). Benjamin Using PCLINUXOS .92 (KDE 3.5.2) The mplayerplugin used by PCLINUXOS is out of date (2.3.15). So I've decided to try to install the latest 3.21 version of the mplayerplug-in on my own but as safely as possible. I am almost there. Here is what I did: 1) I decided to uninstall the mplayerplugin 2.3.15 in Synaptic. Nothing else. I was told by a forum member that our current version of mplayer is good enough for the new 3.21 plugin issued on Feb. 12. 2) I installed directly from Synaptic the following: mozilla mozilla-dev firefox-dev I then downloaded the tar.gz source file of mplayerplugin from the author's site at: http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/ I untarred the file and then tried to install it from the console. Installing the plugin by tar.gz should mean that it is customized for my system, it finds mplayer and its dependencies on its own and should play normally once it's installed. In other words (I hope), there should be no conflicts, especially since I uninstalled the older version of the plugin in Synaptic. The Synaptic installations of mozilla, mozilla-dev and firefox-dev are all standard. I installed them because they were demanded by the "configure" script of mplayerplugin the first time I ran it. With these installed (a total of around 100 MB, by the way), I repeated the "configure" procedure. This time it ran fine. But I ran into a snag concerning a certain file in "make". I would very much appreciate your help in resolving this issue. Here is a screenshot showing exactly what the error is in the "make" script: http://www.websher.net/tmp/mplayerplugin_make.txt I would appreciate your advice and help in completing this installation of the latest plugin. I think that installing a customized version with the tar.gz file is better than trying to force the latest mandrive rpm, which was suggested by some members of the forum. You never know what the consequences are down the road. What is your professional opinion? If this works out, it might help others who may also want to upgrade, not just this time but also in the future. This will allow us users to take charge of some of our installation issues on our own without jeopardizing the overall integrity and stability and reliablity of PCLinuxOS. Thank you so much. Basically the compile failed on the optional languages... So if you need something other than English, you might want these. I'm interested in what ./configure reported for you. Cause your make should have looked more like this... Notice all the extra libs... I think it is documented that you should have gtk2.0-devel installed (libgtk2.0-dev on debian) and perhaps a few other libs. I am excited about the version of the plugin. I installed gettext from our repository. When building run "make" as a regular user. Run "make install" as a regular user to install it for 1 user only... Files end up in ~/.mozilla/plugins This is what I normally do or Run "make install" as root (via sudo make install or by su - root and then make install) Files should end up in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins (but this may vary depending how mozilla and/or firefox is packaged on your system and I cannot help with that.) For an rpm package you can see where the files are placed by doing this rpm -ql mplayerplug-in The install page has more info on this. Either that or you can request that your distro upgrade mplayerplug-in... BTW the version they are releasing is 3.15 and the current version is 3.21. I am using 3.21 + patches that have not made it into a release yet (should be soon). Everything is now installed properly. I did a system-wide "make install" and the plugins (both .so and .xpt) are in usr/lib/mozilla. The Quick Time videos are fabulous, but the streaming video at NBC News (all I could see was the introductory commercial) is still of poor quality and "stutters". At the end of the commercial, the video stopps with the word "Stopped". Please see screenshot at: http://www.websher.net/temp/nbcnightly.png You can find the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams at: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/ Look in the middle of the page. I know you are doing your best, so perhaps this is a case of a moving target. All in all, I am quite pleased. Hope you can work out any remaining problems. Or maybe I am doing something wrong. Thank you. Benjamin |

And then I reloaded the page and the stuttering went away. You may have to make this a larger value depending on your connection. The quality of the commercial is not very good. Also when the commercial was done. All I did next was to click on (just to the left of the video). Also you do not have to wait for the commercial to finish to select this either. 4/03 - Nightly news cast and then Brian Willams started talking. Again I am using a slightly newer version of mplayerplug-in that is not available yet (hopefully this weekend) which might have a fix, if this does not work for you.
