Since the approved way of handling URLs is to convert them to URIs, I suggest the implementation of

MimeUtil.getMimeTypes(URI uri)

to enable the recommended handling of URLs:

MimeUtil.getMimeTypes(url.toURI())

I would also suggest deprecating the URL version.

Just for your information, this has already been looked at by us and for the upcoming V3.0 release this will be changed.
