I need some code/dll to which I send the media files name (avi/mpeg/wmv) and it detect the codecs used in the media file and find out that if the same or compatible codecs are installed on machine. The player is directx based.

This is a planned feature for MediaInfo, but not yet...
Gspot can give you this piece of info, but this is not a DLL, only GUI, and closed source.
Maybe you can use automation of Gspot.
