I think the problem is that compose hits an assertion somewhere. I have created a toy that simulates Inkscape's pattern-along-path, "paptest.cpp"
Run it with these parameters:
paptest "M 222.85714,738.07647 C 259.32865,384.73257 268.51943,894.02882 263.71429,552.36219" "M 74.285714,126.6479 L 102.85714,78.076468 L 211.42857,89.50504 L 194.28571,143.79075 L 85.714286,146.6479"

It appears to be fixed now? I've run your example without trauma. However, I have got invariant errors playing with path-along-path. It would be worth investigating these, but I believe they are a different bug.
