The Smalltalk.rb project spun up largely in response to a few comments I
made on Avi's blog claiming Java could run Ruby much better than he
believe it could, in response to his previous posts that it would be a
better use of time to target a Smalltalk VM for Ruby. I joined the
Smalltalk.rb mailing list, and watch as the initial burn cooled and
completely sputtered out. As of now it's a dead list.
The idea is certainly sound, but I don't believe for a moment that a
smalltalk VM would be a better hosting environment than the JVM, since I
know from talking with JVM core developers that the underpinnings of VMs
like StrongTalk and Self are already working hard under the covers in
HotSpot. We just need to find a way to expose them, and any dynamic
language on the JVM could see the same kind of performance of which
StrongTalk boasted. The pieces are all there, and just need to be put
