I can not say I know of a use for this (considering I love vi, but would never expect users of my website to use it).
None the less, I wonder if you could add some control character handling. Particularly ^[ which I use in lieu of [esc] because somewhere in the past esc has not present or mapped to something else. Doesn't everyone use ^[ for escape? It's much easier to type ;-)
