I have added and committed Thomas Kreitler's Rotor model and helicopter enhancements to JSBSim CVS. This should enable helicopter modeling in JSBSim. Testing and evaluation of the code enhancements, and comments on the XML specifications are solicited and valuable. There is an initial test script that exercises the capability. From the command line, type this: src/jsbsim.exe --script=scripts/sim_primer Documentation will be sent to the developer and user lists shortly, and will be included in the JSBSim Reference Manual soon. I have made this evening a major change in JSBSim. I have removed the FGState class. This class had become mainly a holder of the simulation time, the timestep size, and initialization functions. Those functions have been moved to the executive, FGFDMExec. The interface class for FlightGear, JSBSim.cxx, has been adjusted in JSBSim CVS. For other simulations such as OpenEaagles and Outtera, the application that calls JSBSim should be careful to make sure that the executive is used to access the time functions. Jon |

I've placed a rough approximation of the DIRECT Jupiter 246 launch vehicle in our CVS repository. Note: I was not involved on the DIRECT team. :-) For more information on DIRECT, see www.directlauncher.com. The model now in CVS contains the J246.xml definition file, a script, various rocket engines and guidance and control system definitions. Hopefully, this will be a good example for anyone wanting to develop a launcher model in JSBSim. This model is not without its flaws and approximations and it is quite incomplete. However, I have found it to be a lot of fun to work with. To run this in standalone mode, try this: src/jsbsim --script=scripts/J2461 This vehicle model was entirely made using publicly available data. This model has also been helpful in refining and testing the equations of motion. Comments welcome. This model is a beta release and will be under heavy development for a while. I've added some new directories for both data logging directives and data plotting files. The former are files that can be specified on the JSBSim standalone command line using the --logdirectivefile=filename option (the option can be specified multiple times). These files tell JSBSim which parameters to log, and how often. The data plotting files (in the data_plot/ subdirectory) are files that define specific plots or sets of plots (per page). The plotting and logging files are named identically to make it easier to script particular runs where a certain type of data is desired to be plotted. The data plotting directives in the atmosphere.xml file, for instance, will log the data that is selected for plotting in the atmosphere.xml data logging file in the data_output/ subdirectory. The prep_plot application has been enhanced to support a variety of new options, and has been made more robust. Also, an MSVC++ project file has been created for that application. Instructions for building prep_plot under cygwin/linux is included in the comments in the prep_plot.cpp file itself. The prep_plot produces output for gnuplot. You don't really need prep_plot to plot the .csv files produced by JSBSim with gnuplot, but I personally find it much easier to specify plots using an XML syntax rather than build gnuplot scripts. Prep_plot produces gnuplot scripts that produce plots with a consistent appearance. I hope these are useful for you. Comments solicited. Jon |

The FGActuator class models: rate limiting, position limiting, hysteresis, deadband, and lag. There are also actuator malfunctions that can be set: fail-to-zero, fail-hardover, and fail-stuck. After having discussed the topic for at least a year, off and on, and agreed upon by the developers, and after having seen the example set by SimGear, etc., JSBSim is changing its license to LGPL (the Lesser GPL). More and more inquiries have been made regarding the use of JSBSim in a commercial setting - not necessarily for commercial products for sale, but for internal projects. The feeling is that the LGPL would make JSBSim more palatable for use by these companies. This kind of exposure should be beneficial to JSBSim, to widen acceptance and grow the user base, and in turn to receive more input on features, bug reports, etc. Jon Jon S. I have made substantial changes to the scripting capability for JSBSim. In doing so I have upgraded the version number to 0.9.12. The scripting changes were needed for some testing and debugging. Some of the items had been getting thought about for a year or two. Related changes will follow that provide new capability for modeling aerodynamic qualities. The changes to the scripting language are not too expansive, and it should not be too difficult to modify existing scripts to run using the new format. The "when" element is now called "event". The conditional test[s] is/are specified using what has become the standard way to specify conditional tests in JSBSim. There are new attributes and keywords. I'll have more information in the upcoming newsletter.
