Hi. http://wiki.gumstix.org/index.php?title=Android_Gingerbread I've been working on a port of Android Gingerbread (2.3) for the Overo. In terms of hardware support, this version is not well-tested and is currently missing some features. My focus has been on improving infrastructure and documentation in hopes that these, in turn, would enable others to help in improving the hardware support. In particular, prebuilt images are now available (with a RSS feed ;-)). These are generated by an automatic build which check outs and builds the code daily. I have moved away from gitorious as a repository host in favour of github which seems a little more reliable---hopefully this means less time re-issuing 'repo sync'. Finally, I put scripts I created along the way into a repository in hopes that this speeds development for others. I certainly welcome contributions :). Hope you like it! -Ash |

While waiting for first build results (downloading by repo really is a challenge...) some questions come up: 1. It seems all build data is stored in sub-folder 'out'. I would like to select the output folder. So I grep'ed around a bit and found in 'build/core/envsetup.mk' hints that the variable 'OUT_DIR' seems a candidate to set this location. How about basing 'OUTPUTDIR' in 'gumcompile' also on 'OUT_DIR'? 2. At the end of 'gumcompile' sgx-make seems disabled. Is there something we should know :-? cheers & thanks for new toy :-) Andreas |

Hi Andreas, OUT_DIR would be the right variable to change (I just did a 'make OUT_DIR=blah/' and Android started building into a 'blah' directory. Hmm...this could actually be handy for fresh builds without blowing away old stuff). The 'OUTPUTDIR' variable is my own creation for the sake of the utility scripts. Re:SGX Short Answer: No. The autoinstall.py script is doing the work now instead of make. Long Answer: Buildbot didn't play nicely with the 'expect' tool used to automate the install of the SGX binaries so I wrote the autoinstall.py script using 'pyexpect' to do the job. At this point, it became nicer just to skip make entirely and do everything in python to avoid cluttering the git tree with the in-place installation make was doing. Curiousity: What part of repo is a challenge? Should I be improving the documentation or are repositories just failing? If the latter, which ones? Hi Kees, Interesting find. So I tried the both the 4.4.0 and 4.4.3 versions of gcc shipping with Android on i686 and x86_64 bit and discovered that the 4.4.3 compiler doesn't work properly but the 4.4.0 does. The gumcompile script uses the 4.4.0 compiler version by default hence why I'd not seen this issue. How stable is the Gingerbread port at the moment? I just bought an Overo Tide COM and a Palo43 board. I am looking for a relatively easy to deal with Android port that will let me load up a custom application; and that supports GPIO, SPI, and USB. Should I go with your Gingerbread port (I'm assuming it will eventually become the default Gumstix image), the Rowboat port, or the TI dev kit port (http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/androidsdk-sitara.html?DCMP=androidemail&HQS=DesignersKit+EM+androidemaile1tf)? I'm looking for something that would be good enough for a commercial production system. Hi, My experience with the two versions is limited but going with a more mature and stable platform is the way to go. I would not recommend running Gingerbread on an already complicated hardware platform such as Gumstix hardware. We did have some problems related to LCD and touchscreen drivers with rowboat but these were quickly overcome with a few tweaks. Hi Mark, The Gingerbread port is certainly a work in progress but I hope to make it a viable other option to angstrom for Gumstix. I've set up the autobuilder and the git repositories to support this in an effort to make this *the* android+gumstix repository but acknowledge that hardware support falls short in a number of areas at the moment as Kevin's appeals on the mailing list have shown. Going forward, this is the repository I plan to work on to make sure Gumstix has support for current and future products but, regrettably, I've got other responsibilities in the company. I believe the TI SDK and the rowboat-android port are one in the same but I could be mistaken. Rowboat has been around longer so has accumulated a community and resources but out-of-the box doesn't support Overo. As it is, I pull many changes from rowboat into the gingerbread port and think they are doing a fantastic job. Hi Mark / Ash, I would much prefer a stable and responsive system to new eye candy. Not that much has changed in Gingerbread from Froyo and I would still recommend Froyo for production devices until Gingerbread has been fully ported over. I'm going to give the gingerbread port a try if support for the Gumstix will be getting better with it over time. If I can figure out GPIO and SPI on it, it will make me happy in the short term. I highly recommend that the make Android your full time job because it is such a desirable platform. I Gumstix hardware hasn't come in yet so I can't test this, but should your gingerbread port boot up first time with over tide and palo43 board?
